I hadn't created lts.conf at all. So now I do:

root@debian:/home/rkwesk# ltsp-config lts.conf
Created /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf

and without any alteration to lts.conf (i.e. there is no reference to
PRINTER_0_DEVICE) the client still hangs (I left it for quite some
time) after the overlayfs module complaint.

Unfortunately I still haven't understood what is the problem.
Accepting that overlayfs is not required and that aufs is then used
perhaps the fact that

root@debian:/home/rkwesk# dpkg --list | grep aufs

yields nothing, and that

root@debian:/home/rkwesk# apt-cache search aufs

reports:

aufs-tools
aufs-tools-dbg
fsprotect

should I install any additional package(s)?
