I experienced a similar problem while installing a fresh SuSE 9.1 on may laptop mid this year. Saw a bit of it on some upgrades from 8.2, but not all machines were affected. You probably want to look out for this (*bug*) when doing your installation (if 9.1). This problem caused my 'sshd' daemon to fail upon start.
