This freetype thingy I  must say is a new one to me

Mind posting some vendor independent tutorial on how to achieve that ?

I should send you a screenshot of KDE on my SuSE box.

My fonts look as good as they do in Windows. And better than is OS X.

The problem is with the bytecode interpreter in freetype. You need to enable it (which unfortunately means compiling freetype from source on older distributions) then _disable_ anti-aliasing. Works wonders.
