This model isn't only used in the U.S., but in the UK and South
Africa as well. In fact, Virgin Mobile in .za said they would not
give away free phones as part of a service or contract like MTN,
Vodacom or Cell C do, but with a low user-base in its first few
months of operation, it has had to rethink this approach.

But yes, I agree that this model will work in very few markets. In
Africa, definitely South Africa will eat this up as they have a
working model. For the other countries, well, either Apple will get
into a contract with a local suitable service provider (not sure
about that), or release models that are not tied to a particular
service provider - or better yet, avid users will hack the phone.
