There's actually a catch to this... SMARTnet contracts are paid for on a per unit basis, i.e., if you buy 3 routers, you buy 3 SMARTnet contracts. With regard to software, even though an authorised Cisco login provides you with access to the entire software library, kit under SMARTnet may only run the feature sets for which they have been licensed, i.e., if you purchase a router with, say, an IP BASE feature set, and then purchase a SMARTnet contract as well, your license only allows you to update within the IP BASE range, and not anything more advanced, i.e., you may NOT update upwards. However, if the code that ships with your router is the ADVANCED ENTERPRISE feature set (which, along with its numerous variations, is the highest on most of Cisco's platforms), you are allowed to update your kit with a less advanced feature set, i.e., you MAY update downwards. While this is not technically enforceable (i.e., the Cisco web site gives you access to the whole library, including what you are not licensed for), Cisco could initiate recourse if they discover you are running code in production for which you are not licensed. In addition, Cisco TAC will not provide support for software that is not licensed as part of your purchase and/or SMARTnet contract. Note, though, that you may test software for which you are not licensed in lab environments, as long as it is not put into production. Cheers, Mark.
