This will work, but not all programs know how to deal with an smb:// link (for 
example OpenOffice has not clue how to open a file like that)

We use KDE and always install SMB4K. This will let you explore the winblows 
network and mount shares in the linux filesystem. That way OpenOffice can 
access them smoothly.

You'll find smb4k in your package manager.
