I think you guys are reading the question round the wrong way? I think he wants 
to know if there is anything special he has to do to Samba to connect to it 
from Windows. The main thing is how you have the shares and workgroup 
configured in your smb.conf. By the default I believe the shares are accessed 
as user based shares so using usernames and passwords on your PC. 

I know for example in Ubuntu I need to first reset the smb password for the 
user using smbpasswd in order for the user to be able to logon on to the box.

If the machine is doing nothing other than file share I'd recommend looking 
into some kind of dedicated tool i.e. ebox, WebMin, or just using a FreeNAS 
box. This tends to make the admin easy in the long run.

This will work, but not all programs know how to deal with an smb:// link (for 
example OpenOffice has not clue how to open a file like that)

We use KDE and always install SMB4K. This will let you explore the winblows 
network and mount shares in the linux filesystem. That way OpenOffice can 
access them smoothly.

You'll find smb4k in your package manager.
