Hi,

Ok, let me rephrase that slightly.

What tool you are going to use does depend on the language you will be
programming in, and the complexity of the software you are going to write.

For simple simple coding just to try stuff out, a normal text-editor is
definitly the way to go. Kate is nice, as it can do some color-coding for
you, which will can help you prevent mistakes. It also starts real quick. And
it removes a lot of cluther from the interface.

Using a tool like Eclipse is like driving a tank. Nice if you want to conquer
the world, but as leen as the real footwork Kate provides.

We use Eclipse mainly because it has CVS & Subversion integration, syntax
checking, debugging integration & php help.

Eclipse is very very heavy though. It easily starts off using 300MB of memory.

As you can see on eclipse.org there are different versions of Eclipse, that
are aiming at different languages. We use the PDT version (for php). It also
supports Java. There are also versions or plugins for other languages.

If you are going to program C++ you might be better of using KDevelop, it is
optimized for developing apps for KDE. If you are going to do webdevelopment
and want to upgrade from Kate, Quanta adds a little WYSIWYG and
file-management that is usefull while building a site.

Now, about moving data around. That is something the Internet is really good
at. Even better than a matatu or boda. We have a server humming in town that
you can reach from Makerere over a very fast link. So downloading the 300MB
or so of Eclipse .zip or running Ubuntu updates from our server should be
doable from MUK. We host data on that server so all people in Uganda, not
just you, can access it, and depending on their ISP, some of them even real
fast.

And if you are patient, next week is the LUG meeting and I got a copy Eclipse
PDT on my local system that you can get a copy of if you bring a CD or memory
stick.

(if you run ubuntu and you want to use our local cache for installing updates
& new software, here is the manual: http://www.linux.or.ug/node/25 )
