Hi,

If you use Kate, you will have to compile from the commandprompt. 

(in my KDE 3.5 Kate has an option to run scripts under the Tool | External 
Tool menu. I guess you could write a script that will call the compiler and 
put it upthere.)

(I even guess someone on the internet has written that script and blogged 
about it)
