At the grub menu, i selected the following options;
> Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.32-24-generic (Recovery mode)
> root (drop to root shell prompt)
> give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue)
I used jmuyimba as passwd
    .. and i got "root@jmuyimba: #"
> Resumed (Resume normal boot)

i then tried the following
1. jmuyimba login: root
                 passwd: (accepts anything)
2. jmuyimba login: user
                 passwd: (accepts anything)
3. jmuyimba login: m4duser
                 passwd: (accepts anything)
