I think you are better off re-installing afresh.

I agree, for a relatively novice user, reinstalling afresh is the
quickest solution right now if there is no worry about potential data
loss. However, knowing the problem might also be helpful.

John, could you check your /etc/gdm/gdm.conf and make sure
PasswordRequired=false is commented out?

I have heavy suspicion that its your GDM causing that anomaly.

Can only see gdm.schemas.

I will do whatever it takes to avoid a fresh reinstallation.
