Hi Ed,

| Speaking of which, I couldn't figure out how to download McFeely's
| pictures in one swoop. Everything else is in PDF.

I thought you could find her collection in a folder of JPGs, but haven't
looked lately.

| I'm so glad you mentioned this. I just bought a WONDERFUL John
| Rollins alto lute with a string length of 51cm. That was precisely
| the thought that went through my mind as I read through stuff. It all
| made sense! Of course the pics, as far as I know in my shallow
| browsing, don't support the widespread use. In fact, sometimes they
| often have huge lutes, but there is a lot that doesn't make sense in
| the lute world and iconography. I hope others will chime in on this
| thread.

Right on! 51 cms. That would make many of those often encountered 3rd-7th
fret stretches much more manageable, and give more fluidity to the playing,
without hampering sound quality too much.

Another thing which has been pointed out on this list, is that you could
simplify difficult passages/chords by ommitting inner voices. Were many of
those full Renaissance chords ment to be simplified? Did Galilei, Newsidler
et. al. put all the voices in there to give the player the option of chosing
which notes he or she wanted to use?

Best Regards

Göran
