Thanks Rob
The reason I asked about the weight is that several lutists have suggested to me that lute construction in the 70s to 80s was ultra light in contrast to the heavy Bream-type lutes, and that more recently there has been a move from the ultra-light to a slightly heavier construction. I would have supposed that historic models would determine the way lutes are now constructed, but I imagine there is enough variation in these, according to the type of wood used (and other factors), to allow quite a wide interpretation.

Your lute being an interpretation of a particular Maler would presumably have a similar (if not identical) construction to that, and certainly a very similar string length (the original, as martin may have said, according to the LSA Database, was baroqued to a 13c by Edlinger, but perhaps with an intermediary existence as an 11c lute. The string disposition being 13 : 2x2/9x2+1 with string length of 73,0/67,3).

In fact, this seems to be the only extant 9 ribbed Maler that has a string length anywhere near that supposed for the Mouton lute. The Prague 655 seems to have had a string length over 71, the NGM over 72, the V&A nearer 74, but the Wien Maler has 11 ribs in yew, so is perhaps later, and has a string length of 72. The Paris Maler has presumably undergone too much alteration to make a good model to copy.

It was strung in gut throughout. The weight was the same as my 11c, pretty much. A little heavy towards the peg box. The right hand string spacing was ideal. A very comfortable instrument to hold and play, but it was difficult to ascertain the tonal qualities without tuning the instrument to pitch.
Museums, of course, tend to just like records of the state of the
instrument, not what it should be like if restored.

Thanks Rob, we can imagine what you would have been able to do with
the Buchenberg tuned up.
How does it feel from the point of view of weight? Is it very much
lighter or heavier than your Maler, or almost the same?
Does it seem well balanced?
How was it strung?
