If strings are spaced too closely to each other in the "plucking zone", it becomes difficult to get a clean pick with thumb in--there's more of a lateral sweep at 90 degrees across the strings with the breadth of the fingertip. With guitar (thumb out) technique, the fingers dig in a little more with the tip only (or nail), with less of a sweep, making clean picking easier with closer spacing.
