> I think that can be > interpreted as anything between 1500 and 1700 of a lively nature. Most of the dancers I have played live music for seem to prefer a tempo that brings them to exhaustion. Some dances benefit with a more stately performance tho.
Pucell sets 'Hole in the wall' nicely in his Abdelazar. Normally this is a madcap line dance. But, if one slows it down to the tempo of an alleman, one discovers all manner of clever 'kidnappings' and other flirtations from onlookers. To the solo musician, slower means opportunity to embellish. I have always been partial to Jenny Pluck Pears, the second part of which gives opportunity to contrast the orchestral parts, when one has a small ensemble. -- Dana Emery To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
