What you’re probably seeing is the famous "tiorba apesca” or “bee-style theorbo,” also known as “snare-drum style," in which tangled extra lengths, and the right sleeve-ruffles that are all over the strings, cause the instrument to buzz. In the mid-18th century, the approach became known as “tiorba ala Hendrix,” the etymology of which is unclear.
