Apropos warning! An artefact of Debian 7's sysvinit scripts render halt(8) and poweroff(8) behaviour identical. Either BOTH cut power, or NEITHER. (The behaviour is configured under /etc/default). Under systemd, they are different: halt will never cut power after stopping the OS. poweroff will always cut power after stopping the OS. This means if, like me, you got into the habit of typing "halt" because it's shorter, you'll be making some trips to the server room. Also: "shutdown" without arguments in Debian 7 sysvinit is an error.
