That is a clear improvement! It still alters the previous settings even after the new checkbox has been selected, but I am able to restore the previous settings by selecting the appropriate keyboard layouts and change layout options: Previous settings (setxkbmap -query) rules: evdev model: pc105 layout: us(mac),ch(de_mac) options: altwin:swap_lalt_lwin,lv3:rwin_switch,compose:ralt,grp: alt_shift_toggle,compose:ralt,lv3:rwin_switch,altwin: swap_lalt_lwin Settings after installing lxpanel_0.5.10.8-1_amd64.deb: rules: evdev model: pc105 layout: us variant: , options: grp:shift_caps_toggle Settings after selecting checkbox and logout (note the double settings for "grp:" which makes the new keyboard layout handler's setting to take precedence over the previously installed one): rules: evdev model: pc105 layout: us variant: , options: grp:shift_caps_toggle,altwin:swap_lalt_lwin,lv3:rwin_switch, compose:ralt,grp:alt_shift_toggle,compose:ralt,lv3: rwin_switch,altwin:swap_lalt_lwin Settings after previous steps AND selecting appropriate layouts and change layout settings: rules: evdev model: pc105 layout: us,ch variant: mac,de_mac options: grp:alt_shift_toggle,altwin:swap_lalt_lwin,lv3:rwin_switch, compose:ralt,grp:alt_shift_toggle,compose:ralt,lv3: rwin_switch,altwin:swap_lalt_lwin That's what I wanted! It would have been nice if the previous settings would have taken precedence, but the important thing is that they can be restored. Just another small inconvenience that I have noticed while (successfully!) restoring the previous settings: The Swiss French keyboard layouts are hidden away under "German (Switzerland)". I think it would be preferable to have all Swiss layouts under a neutral ☺ label such as "Swiss". Btw, thanks also for correcting the Swiss flag! -- ciao mach ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Everyone hates slow websites. So do we.
