The problem is that Messages::get() is called with an already translated string. This is a programming error that would not have been found with the brute force string->docstring approach.

Well if you look at the code, there is a FIXME here (my doing I think):

        // FIXME UNICODE: _() does not support anything but ascii.
        // Do we need a lyx::to_ascii() method?
        sendDispatchMessage(_(lyx::to_utf8(getMessage())), cmd);

I am not sure this has any anything to do with the conversion approach.
I reckon the right approach is to create a lyx::to_ascii() method.
