The difference is that in the LyX file, strong will be bold (whereas
emph is really emph). So in 1.6, people will find that their 'strong'
text has turned to 'bold'. This will only add to the confusion IMO.
This is not a big deal. In 1.5.x, we have strong as \textbold, emph
as \emph, etc in 1.6.x, we replace the icons with something with a
bracket underneath, and replace all of them with the charstyle
equivalence.
I mean, in 1.6.x, plain strong, emph etc are kept the same (accessible
from menu, after charstyles), and toolbars are updated with
charstyles.
I am not talking about the interface, but about the contents of file.
If you use 'strong' in 1.5 and it becomes 'bold' in 1.6, there is a
problem.

Would lyx2lyx which translates bold to strong solve the problem?
