(Sh)it happens! I've got your fix.
*Compiling the code with NEW_INSETS turned off.
The saved file is identical to the original.

The saved file is subtly different to the original (but appears to make
sense. Hoorah! Progress!). For example it requires float.sty!
* Got float.sty. Latex runs without error and the result looks pretty much
as it did before.
I guess that this counts as success. Congratulations! No doubt I'll find bugs
as I go along, but for now I can proclaim that it works! Note, however, that I
have written nothing yet! Merely saved and reloaded the file.
