I really have no idea where this came from. I'm going to sleep now so I'll
check it tommorow. Though I only have egcs 1.1.2 (gcc 2.91)

I believe I saw it done this way elsewhere, I'd prefer to remove the
ifdefs, they are ugly. I'll get back to my code now that I can run lyx
again, I'll fix it too.
