Typically the VCS tool would take care of interchanging the data. Maybe an example of how VCS is used in the LyX development is in place. The source code is stored in a 'repository' on a server (aussie.lyx.org). Developers can then use the VCS tool to get a local copy of all the files. When a developer has changed the files, he can 'commit' the new version of the files to the repository on the server (using the VCS). Other developers can then use the tool to update their copies of the files.

If LyX has support for the VCS tool that you use, these actions (checkout, commit, update) can all be done from within LyX.
