Which is IMO more consistent (as non-bold Latin characters are italic in
math as well).
Also, \boldsymbol works for Greek characters too -- a feature I need very
often. OTOH, only the 'mathdesign' package provides for upright Greek
characters with \mathbf.
I think this was the reason we changed it: \mathbf is very picky.
