What I just, following this thread, is to bind Ctrl+\ to ert-insert - so I can easily (and intuitively!) go into "LaTeX mode". auto-completion for LaTeX in the ERT box will be tricky I guess, due to all the packages which can be loaded in the pramble - but nice.
