I am not sure. When a babel language environment is used 
(\begin{otherlanguage}...\end{otherlanguage}), I'd expect the same nesting 
issues than with polyglossia.

Alas, I do not have time now to look more closely.

Please go ahead. In doubt, going back to the status quo for babel cannot harm.
