I am completely with you, but I think if we could support both (as I

and a default choice set in preferences.
The second sentence contradicts the use of
Document->Settings->Save as default

OK, so rather than setting the default in global preferences, I guess it could
be set
in document settings for whatever template is being used (including the default
document type for File > New).
