Well, the backslash is not part of the token. So it is not explicitly removed
at any place.

I could look at it as a "visual delimiter" in things like \su\mi\nt
which currently displays as "sumint". And given the fact that there is not
as much need for ERT in math nowadays as we used to have two weeks ago
adding spurious backslashes would not hurt too much...
