I don't mean anything special regarding languages etc. I just want to be
able to parse TeX properly, but given my set of skills it's probably going
to be C++ (unless, of course, somebody shows me a _good_ tex parser in any
other language apart from web ;-})

We have been moving in this direction. Getting the cursor right is probably
the biggest challenge in this area.

Nah... at least for mathed this should be _really_ straightforward. Less
than 500 lines, almost no impact on existing code.

To get \mbox working I need "text insets" and I only can reuse the "real"
text insets if the cursor is unified... *cough*

Purely for speeding up recompilation. If it is not used at all anymore -
fine.
