You should do that from your modified tree.
cvs tag BRANCH_POINT_NOUPDATE
cvs rtag -r BRANCH_POINT_NOUPDATE -b BRANCH_NOUPDATE lyx-devel
cvs co -r BRANCH_NOUPDATE
or something...
(all from within your modified source tree)
