You still didn't even try to compile the qt4 frontend? I'd call that inertia ;-)

sluggish as ever when using the scrollbar in Intro.lyx, the gtk
frontend is really really fast :) This means I can grab the slider and
just move around without _any_ delay (on a P4 1.7Ghz, nothing fancy).

What you describe is standard behaviour on Windows/qt4 with the UserGuide! ;-) At least that was the case before unicode. My LyX is still chinese on windows...
