It's possible that the failure happens not because the
file is large in itself, but because it contains something lyx2lyx is
unable to handle correctly.

Please use Scott's steps to either test the file with 2.0.8.1, or to
come up with a minimal example exhibiting the issue in 2.1.x (the
latter being the only way we could pinpoint the problem and see if it
can be addressed).
