Thank you Paul. I have tried your suggestion and it looks like there may be a font problem although I'm not good enough at reading the terminal output to be sure. I have posted the output at http://ca.geocities.com/jrkrideau/LyX/lyx.ooo.pdf .
I am not getting any error messages but two warnings instead. I have tried changing the fonts with no success. What did you change the font setting to?
