Well, stretching may embed five times as many fonts, which will
increase a small file dramatically. I don't think it will be as dramatic
if the text is much bigger than the font files to begin with.
Also, one can fine-tune the stretching to use only one extra
stretched/compressed font instead of many. This will be less
effective but it will still help - and the file size doesn't increase as
much.
