Thanks very much Paul, I have no time today, but tomorrow or the next day I'll delete the LyX source tree, re-extract the tarball, and try again now that libqt4-devel is installed.
One thing I cannot do is upgrade from Qt-4.1.4 to Qt-4.2.3. I'm concerned about the stability of my system as a whole if I were to try that and fail.
