I see. However, when I look in the "binaries" folder I don't see any other "update" installer except the alternate one.

I don't understand.
In ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.6.3/ you find the update installer that updates from 1.6.2 to
1.6.3, in ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.6.2/ you find the update installer that updates from 1.6.1
to 1.6.2 and so on.
