Welcome to the fun! Yes, a photo of the motherboard would help :)

If it proves out that one of the issues is with the contrast control pot,
then there are options. Sadly, they don't make one-to-one replacements for
VR1 any more.
I too had issues with VR1 -- and couldn't find a modern replacement. So I
made a tray that fits in the VR1 space to allow a modern potentiometer to
work.

I've recently updated the design to a PCB, but the website doesn't reflect
