as long as you are in the "to" box, it should allow you to do this. I tried it and even though the testbed is no longer an active phone, vr did work.

Dusty: I was able to use my voice to send and compose a text using a name
from my contact list. But it does not seem to want to accept phone
numbers. Am I missing something, or is that just the limitation of the
Speech Recognition program? Thannks, Clare

using MA's built in phone dialer, just hold down the volume down
button,
you don't need to long press the volume up key in ma, only outside
of
it, then while pressing the down volume, when you feel the
vibrations,
speak the number and then release the volume key. I hope that
helps.

Dusty: Your directions worked splendidly! Thank you so much for
taking
the time to help me. We are now able to bring up the virtual
keyboard
when we long press the volume up key, but that is where we are
stuck. For
instance, if I want to use Voice recognition to dial a number, I
go to
Phone (in MA, of course) and then to "Dial Number." I long-press
the
volume up key, and the virtual keyboard appears. We tried
long-pressing
the Volume down key at this point, but nothing happens and it will
not
accept voice input to say a number. Is there something that we are
still
missing? Thanks so much, Clare

then go to settings, language and keyboards, check mobile
accessibility, go to default keyboard, tap it, and choose mobile
accessibility. It may be labeled something like system keyboard
instead
of default. not only does it have to be activated as a keyboard
choice,
but just like you have to do when installing a new tts engine,
you
need
to set it as the default keyboard. you can do this from ma as
well.
If
you think you have it activated and you need to set it as
default,
from
ma, go to ma settings, text input, virtual keyboard, advanced,
and
set
input method, select mobile accessibility and it is done.

I'm sorry, but I have tried long-pressing the volume Up key over
and over
again, and nothing happens. I do not hear the two vibrations.
