Does this database have to be on a local machine?
I.E. would a php driven mysql database on an internet host do the trick?
I know you'd like to get bento to work, I would too in your place,
but if a web alternative is doable (may obviate the need to export
it, since they could just access it from anywhere they have net
access) then building such an animal is relatively simple, and could
probably be done in just a few hours/days, including the php code
needed for driving the web pages to do the interfacing.
Just another option, no harm done if it doesn't work for you in this
case.
