Hello Andy, First of all, no Macs come with boot disks anymore. That ended with the arrival of the Appstore, much to my regret.
All Macs running Lion or later have a recovery partition which is where you go to reinstall the system. Alternatively, you can download the OS again and make a bootable USB key, which is what I always do so that I can do a clean install without being obliged to connect to the internet via ethernet to ensure a reliable connection. You can find information online about creating a bootable USB key.
