Hi Esther and others,

This worked! I changed the setting to default and now just have the usual
headings. I suspect that as a new Mac user in 2009 I probably changed the
setting myself when trying to get mail to show me something or do something for
me. I then transferred the setting each time i migrated to a new computer. And
the setting held each time I upgraded my operating system.
I'm so very pleased to be able to use forward again in this efficient
manner.

You may ask why I waited 5 years to ask. I have seen this question
come up on Mac lists before. this is the first time I read a working answer.

Thanks to all who stuck in there to help me get a answer. And, Esther,
you rock!
