Well my problem is even a bit more basic than that David. when connected by
usb the focus blue 40 is there and when I unplugged the usb to connect via
bluetooth, it seemed to be there because I had an option to remove it in the
bt section, yet there was no communication between the braille display and
the mac.

It is definitely possible but I have no personal experience . I understand
from other posters that the pairing process is tricky as Apple give so
little time to complete the pairing. A lot of people have had to resort to
sighted help.
I did see someone post who said that they succeeded in getting to the
right
part of the screen fast enough by using item chooser and typing focus.

You configure Braille settings in the VoiceOver Utility, first of all in
the Braille category, then in Verbosity under Braille.
