I have no doubt that Apple can be around for a long time. After all,
they crushed the competition 25 years ago. Remember, at the time they
were fighting IMSI, Radio Shack, Commadore and a few others. They are
all long gone.

IBM was supposed to crush Apple like a bug. Didn't happen. In the last 2
decades, Apple has generally been #1 to #4 in worldwide computer sales
(they are, after all, a hardware company). This morning, Apple is the #1
retailer of computers in Japan.

Many PC users would want a Mac if they were cheaper. And many Honda
Goldwing riders used to say they would buy a Harley if they were
cheaper. Well, they still cost more, and they sell like hotcakes.
Personally, I would buy a Ferrari if only they were cheaper. However, I
am not holding my breath; I'm pretty sure a $20K Ferrari wouldn't be the
same car I'm lusting after now.

I don't believe you get what you pay for; I know of too much expensive
junk out there. But I believe you can buy a quality product that does
the job if you pay attention, and it is rare but not impossible for that
quality product to be the least expensive.

There are many people out there wo do not use a computer as a glorified
word processor/playstation. These guys look at a $5000 Mac system and
see a bargain compared to the $15K SGI workstation it can replace (or
supplement).

A PC is not a Mac. To put it another way; we should be asking why you
can't spend $3000 and get a PC as good as a Mac, not the other way
around.

Apple have made mistakes, and I think they learn from them. Sure they
will be around. But changes are coming, in this industry more than
others. Maybe in 10 years a PC will cost 500 and a Mac 600; maybe it
will be 159 and 199. At what price point do you think people will move
to a quality product? I think the iMac proved it doesn't have to be as
cheap as many industry watchers think; if I were Dell I would be more
worried about all the firms I depend on to push my boxes. How healthy
are the companies who make my OS, my components? Will Linux mature? In
the future will they refer to Linux as a MS-killer or a OSX-killer?
