None of the Apple laptops at this price are useful - no OS-X and ageing parts. :-( Thinkpads are excellent value here - you could get a sub-notebook plus accessories - or the beautiful Compaq Armada M300. Both are smaller and lighter than the 12inch ibook. You could run GNUStep - this is 99% source-compatible with Cocoa.
