To ensure that you haven't done this yet;

1. Using the Mac with 4.7.1 go to your preferences in iTunes and under the
import heading select import using MP3. Then click the accept button. Select
the tracks you want to convert and then under the advanced menu heading in
iTunes select the convert selection to MP3. Does this solve your problem?

One note to be aware of before checking all this is that iTunes is
interactive in this regard. I.e whatever you have set as the import format
in Pref's will become the menu item in convert selection to ---.

Afterwards you would have to then get them on the iPod and then use your
tool to get them onto the iMac...

The older versions of iTunes probably don't support AAC or some other newer
formats and probably also due to the fact that QT 6.5 or later (IIRC) are
required for AAC...
