I'm not so sure. As OS X has become more refined it's been less demanding. Panther was noticeably faster than Jaguar on my Cube. Also the last of the CD-ROM eMacs was discontinued only 18 months ago.

I can confirm that Tiger runs smoother than Panther on the same hardware. Not as big as the jump from Jaguar to Panther, but there's definitely a perceptible speed increase.
