Hi there as my last posting was basicly gibberish I'll try again,
After replacing the back up battery I booted up but the Mac made a terrible noise (Not broken glass thankfully) flashed the HDD light a few times then it booted into Open Firmware from there I booted in to X (Typing Mac-boot), I then put my OS X cd in a restarted holding C but again terrible noise flashing light open firmware.

I got onto the Apple service site for the eMac and found the instructions about how to reset the NVRAM which I carried out (To no availe still goes straight to Firmware)

Then I managed to use my OS X CD's disk utility to repaire permissions, Restarted again (Into Open firmware ) then once into OS X opened a terminal window and updated Prebinding and after all that Mail and Firefox STILL refuse to open, Could the open firmware thing be related to Mail and Firefox's reluctance to open?

Thanks for bearing with me
Cheers Darren

On my eMac 700MHz 512Mb running 10.2.8 when I run Norton it tells me I
have a major issue with my B tree something or other and not being able
to run from my Norton CD (Scratched to high heaven) I seem to be stuck
is there really no way to repair it when it is the boot volume?

<snip>

As bad as it sounds, you can get things back in order. Get yourself a copy
of DiskWarrior version 3 or later and use that. Dump Norton, it causes more
problems than it helps. It sounds like your directory was corrupted during
the fixing process of Norton.

Have you tried running Disk Utility from your Jag install CD? If not insert
this and go to the menu bar and choose the option to open disk utility and
then repair the disk and repair permissions.

To help in the meantime until you get your copy of Alsoft's DiskWarrior do
this to try to get the files your apps need to use linked back to the app:

In Terminal type:

Update_prebinding -verbose -root /

This will update the files an app needs to have associated to it and upon
pressing enter the Terminal window will spew out a whole lot of data (don't
panic!) just let it go and after a few minutes (5 to 15 approx) it will
return a command line prompt.
