Back in the days of 8 I ran Norton several times over a disk that Norton
said was irreparable and got it completely back.
However I don't trust Norton anymore except as a last resort.
I use DiskWarrior for Disk directory issues. I reckon its worth a try.
You have done well to get as far as you have - especially if you still have
any hair left!
I wonder what exactly is the noise you get - and when you say Firefox and
mail don't open do you mean they don't open when double clicking the
application icons?
If you can I would be tempted to back up immediately and erase and reinstall
the Mac OS.
all the best
Brian
