I think the sound that the Mac makes is the sound that says its ready for a firmware update (Reading from the Apple website.) this seems to correspond with the HDD led flashing as it dose but I have no idea how its got the idea its getting a firmware update as there are non available.
Mail and Firefox will not open from the Dock or from the Applications folder icons even with a frustrated dozen click, anybody know an easy way to back up 27GB external HDD? any recomended software?

I wonder what exactly is the noise you get - and when you say Firefox and
mail don't open do you mean they don't open when double clicking the
application icons?
If you can I would be tempted to back up immediately and erase and reinstall
the Mac OS.
