Mind me asking if you have done any research into what your main competitors
are doing and what your main prospective customers are like?

I ask because there are those that rather enjoy receiving a well designed
and useful email which then leads them to check in more detail and then
there are those that are plain text fanatics and categorically dismiss
anything with HTML content as spam...I have to say that if you are doing
anything remotely tied to charity or social issues then a newsletter is a
good method of communication and tends to be accepted far easier by people
than if you were selling double glazing...

You may wish to consider doing a plain text message with a simple hyperlink
to your newsletter on your site and if they are interested they can download
it (as long as you keep it small) and possibly then would explore your site
as well...this has an advantage that the email size is quite small and
respects that not everyone has Broadband flat rates...

On the other hand if one of your unique points is your design concept and
your market base is young, hip, multimedia types (stereotyping here) then
anything short of an email with embedded full-on flash based orgy of colour
and action could mean failure...

Consider asking your current trusted customers if they would like to be kept
up to date on the latest news you have and if so how? HTML email (best to
have an example) or simple plain text format (example) or something else
they can suggest...(they are after all the people you are trying to reach!)
If they are the niche that you have already found and have won over then
surely they would be a good place to start for gaining new customers...Have
you already asked every customer/contact/lost sales contact you have if they
know someone who could use your services and if they could help introduce
you? (this will be far more effective in terms of time and profit and has
essentially no costs in comparison).

Newsletters when done right can be a great sales and marketing tool but they
can be expensive in terms of time and money (especially if you do paper
copies as well) and once you have started one you should make sure that you
are on time and regular...nothing worse than a great kick-off and then a few
issues and a gradual death because of time or other restraints that keep you
from producing it.

Anyway hope some of my mad ramblings help...

Good luck!

Trying to bring my own post back on topic (sorry)...

What Macs do you have to do this work? What software do you have available
currently? Are you or is someone you employ comfortable with email/ HTML
issues? Are your customers asking you for this service or are you thinking
that this could be a way to gain new clients? Do your competitors do a
newsletter? What format do they use? (may suggest what the market
preferences are but not always)...

Cheers,

Richard
